From previous posts you will see that the garden bloomed! When we had to lay some stepping stones to our shed, the soil was&nbsp;unrecognisable&nbsp;from the start of the makeover. There were so many worms, a sign of healthy soil!<br /><br />Also, join Garden Organic's 'I don't Dig Peat' campaign to get gardeners to stop using peat in their gardens. <a href="http://www.earthcycle.co.uk/whyearthcycle.html">Earth Cycle</a> massively supports this campaign. Look at the ingredients of the compost you are buying, especially Multi-purpose composts, which still have large amounts of peat in them. Think you can see why I was less involved in this part. However, in my&nbsp;defense&nbsp;I was digging the hole for the shed base, dug over the soil on turf area and helped cart Top Soil Supreme into the necessary places. All are tolerant of partial and even deep shade. Advice online suggests trialling with plants to see if they thrive in shade, so as with gardening in general, that is what I am doing. The Tricyris' seem to be doing well.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I am looking forward to the challenge of a north facing garden, the raised bed gets more light than anywhere else, so I should be able to experiment more with the variety of plants. But I am thinking I would like a country garden/woodland type theme. I also want to grow herbs for cooking. I hope to keep you updated on progress. They cleared the site (which had weeds up to waist high!) and set about design.<br /><br />Once designed, the products needed to be sourced, so Earth Cycle were happy to oblige. Soil and <a href="http://www.earthcycle.co.uk/products/barkchips.html">Bark </a>were the order of the day! Solar power is perhaps the ultimate in renewable energy by harnessing the free fuel provided by the sun and does so without any harmful emissions. This project will generate enough clean energy to power c.1200 homes, more than in the whole of our parish! The report found that organic milk contained lower levels of saturated fats, more&nbsp;beneficial&nbsp;fatty acids and the quality was better all year round. Chris Jones, (he) was a fruit farmer in Hampshire near Bordon. This book, entitled Farming month by month was written by a J. Gunston in 1943.</span><br /><br /><span style="color: purple;">As I write in November 2010 we are in a particularly cold snap. The saying for November 1943 is</span><br /><strong><span style="color: purple;">"No shade, No shine, No butterflies, No bees, No fruit, No flowers, No leaves, No birds - NOvember!!"</span></strong><br /><span style="color: purple;">The author goes on to say,</span><br /><em><span style="color: purple;">"Thus runs the old proverb. Though no wholly true it gives the general trend of affairs in this comfortless month which is noted for dense fogs, especially in London."'</span></em><br /><br /><span style="color: purple;">'One of the fascinating things about this book is that it was written nearly 70 years ago when horse and carts were still the main form of draught and pesticides and oil based fertilisers had not yet been invented. Yet as a Farmer myself,&nbsp;I recognise that if anyone in 2010 picked up this book and ran a farm entirely according to the advice given in it, they wouldn't go far wrong. </span><br /><br /><span style="color: purple;">As an organic farm people often say that we are farming as my Grandfather would have. I usually gently refute this as we have the benefit of tractors, combines, modern varieties of wheat and hand milking is , thank goodness, a distant memory. However, reading this book I think those people are ostensibly correct. Mother Nature hasn't changed the rule book but human beings have. As a society we demand cheaper and cheaper food and more and more of it. Thus technology, production methods and intensive systems have developed to acheive this. Pesticides and 4000 cow dairy units seek to defeat Mother Nature to produce cheap food. </span><br /><br /><span style="color: purple;">Strip the 'human element' away and the advice of 1943 on how to work with the seasons, look after the soil, care for animals and so on remains as true as it did then. Jessie Younghusband School!<br /><br />We only found out on the night and were joined on our table by Suzanne and Rachel (headteacher and head of the Eco Team). The school collects rainwater, has compost piles and a greenhouse made out of plastic bottles! It marks the start of new beginnings in my mind. This must be ingrained from school, but also we all like to enjoy summer so I think we sit back and observe more. September marks a 'waking up' period for me. Plus, I love the garden and green space colour changes.<br /><br />On that note, it is time to start looking after the garden, ready for the dreaded winter period. Lawns tend to suffer in the winter and can become water logged. Now is the perfect time to dress your lawn with rootzone.<br /><br />To dress an existing lawn, apply a layer of Turf dressing rootzone at 1/4-1/2" depth and brush/rake in. The brushing will stimulate new growth and enhance response as the mix of sand and compost will penetrate to the roots of the grass.<br /><br />It is not essential, but best practice is to aerate the lawn. To aerate the lawn hollow tine the soil (take out plugs of soil with a hollow tine tool) and brush in a layer of 1/4 to 1/2" of Turf Dressing rootzone. This can be done with the back of a rake. The plugs create a space in the lawn to reduce compaction and the rootzone gets to the roots of the grass quickly to feed your lawn and improve drainage.<br /><br />If needing to repair the lawn in areas, apply a 1/4" of rootzone in area for repair and overseed with chosen grass seed.<br /><br />Need a new lawn? If sowing a new lawn into soil, apply a layer of 1/2-1" depth of turf dressing rootzone and sow grass seed into it. Remember to water regularly and protect from birds to see fast growth.<br /><br />Can't wait for seed to grow? Well use rootzone at a layer of 1/2-1" depth before the laying the turf. Harvest is well and truly underway. And the office staff here can clearly tell as the farm foreman has not been in for coffee for a little while now!!!<br /><br />Although the rain inhibits the harvest to a degree, it is very much welcomed with open arms here on the farm. Yet this company has two distinct views of rain. The farm want, and need, the rain but the recycling centre want the weather dry so they can screen the compost and soil conditioning products.<br /><br />When the stereotypical view of the 'English' is that we drink tea and talk about the weather, I am starting to think that this is becoming increasing true as I get older. Tea seems to be the answer to everything; stress, sadness, times of celebration and as a social get together. The YouTube videos in response to this new bag is entertaining alone, but when you look at the advertising campaign, is it just greenwashing?<br /><br />Another key point to come out of the seminar is the decomposition of biodegradable materials at sea. The Green Blue provide very interesting tips and advice on best practice at sea to reduce our impact on the environment.<br /><br />Statistics that stand out are:<br /><ul><li>Cigarette ends can last up to 5 years and can cause birds to starve if swallowed</li><li>Even something as innocent as a banana or orange skin will last around 2 years in the water</li></ul>The key message is to not litter at sea, remembering that salt water acts as a preservative. The sun was blazing, with the gentle breeze, over looking the cows happily munching the plentiful grass.<br /><br /><span style="font-style: italic;">"... I can't hear you, you're breaking up a bit"</span> says the person I am having a conversation with on the mobile phone.<br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">"That is because I work on a farm"</span> is my response (meaning our rural location, I don't actually do any farming, although Sam is determined that we will go to the dairy parlour!!!)<br /><span style="font-style: italic;">"That must be lovely"</span> he says.<br /><br />Sitting back thinking about it, I realised he is absolutely right.<br /><br />I would happily not have any mobile signal if it means that I can work in the beautiful surroundings that currently embrace our offices. I enjoy the roaring sounds of the farm vehicles, the mooing of the cows as well as watching them run around like little kids when they are put in a new field and I love the fact that I can drive 10 minutes down the road and be in a city.<br /><br />But, to save on fuel (both financially and for the environment), you can stroll around the farm at lunch, even with the dog if you bring him/her to work.<br /><br />I feel that the options are much more plentiful. People say that the quality of your working life can be much improved by the surroundings and atmosphere of your office. A perfect opportunity to get back in the garden!<br /><br />We know the staff here will be, including:<br /><br />Sam - who will be tending her much adored, newly required allotment. Sam has been using Earth Cycle products to improve the conditioner of the soil as she only found 2 worms when digging over the plot. Hoping that her worm population will vastly increase!<br />Runner bean planting is the task of this weekend, as well as watering!<br /><br />I (Vikki) do not have my own garden yet :( However, I do have a very nice money maker tomato plant growing in a sunny window, so I shall continue to watch and water that.
